People on Jalopnik and car guys in general often argue about what is best or coolest in the automotive world. This ranges from debates on current fads trends like Stance/Donks, to classic arguments over the benefits, detriments and superiority of FWD/AWD/RWD or manual/automatic transmissions, all the way back to Chevy vs. Ford. vs. Mopar and NASCAR vs. Formula 1.

The problem with these discussions, and perhaps any argument concerning a topic that someone feels strongly about, is that as soon as it begins many people become completely ignorant and unreceptive toward others' viewpoints and jump to such extreme ends of a debate that they are unwilling to compromise that opinion by even considering a middle ground.*

Therein lies the problem.

Consider the following:

Stanced/Donked/Lowriders/Hellaflush/Rat Rods/etc cars exist only for looks, no-one is going to the track in one of those or even drive it enthusiastically on the street and very few are stupid enough to daily drive an extreme example. As long as they are built properly and driven sparingly, why bother hating on them? It may not be your style, but it's also not your problem.

NASCAR vs. F1 comes down to essentially the same thing. You may not like one or the other but there is no point in putting one because you don't like it.

Manufacturer preference is fine, in fact I understand brand loyalty and think its something important for manufacturers to try to develop and maintain but to refuse to even consider something else based on such an allegiance is just absurd.

[FWD vs. AWD vs. RWD] or [Manual vs. Auto vs. DCT] - There is no absolute right answer for any of these. Each has it's own merits.
FWD has it's packaging and cost benefits, awd has a traction advantage and rwd may be the best dynamically. That doesn't mean however that rwd/fwd are useless in snow, or that fwd cars can't be good to drive, that's silly to assume.
A manual may be the most engaging and fun, a DCT may be faster and more efficient and an automatic may be best in traffic. That doesn't mean that autos or DCTs can't be engaging fun or that manuals are unusable in traffic and slow. Again, silly.

I think I've covered most of them there but you can apply reasonable thinking to almost any subject. I'm not saying everyone here is guilty of such closed minded thinking but there are definitely some that should try this approach.

This goes as far as left/right wing political, religious or gun control discussions. If more people had less of a tendency to drift toward the extreme ends of said arguments and would consider a middle ground, maybe a lot more would get done and less people would get butthurt in the process.

Just remember, nothing is absolute, everything in moderation and try to be reasonable in your preferences and what you consider allowable. All of the following can be cool/acceptable in their own way.

Except you mr. Hummer H2 owner. You are still a tool and those shrinking testicles of yours, you should probably get that checked out.

I meant to post this when these debates were a little more current but only just managed to put the words down in a way I am happy with.

If someone can come up with a better title, let me know. Mine is way too damn long.

My problem is that it is my business whenever stanced cars start showing up and invading local car shows. If I have to sift through 100 stupid looking cars to get to the Manual-Volvo-Turbo-Wagon in the back of the lot than it is my problem. Or if a car show gets shut down because they want to do FWD burnouts (happened a few times actually) then it becomes a pretty big problem. Not to mention they're all extremely pretentious and cliche when they come to a show that is meant for all types of cars. They want to be respected, but can't show respect themselves. That is what I have a problem with. And the stereotype always seems to fit.

The fact that people who grasp this concept are here, is why oppo is a great place. Nicely put (although I skimmed through). People forget this a lot. Especially younger more fiery people.

It depends what it's on. My dad has a couple ATVs with CVTs. They are awesome for putzing through woods and over rough technical stuff. We call them the rolling couches.

My two comments are:

#1. You're right; to each his own on customization. HOWEVER, I cannot stand customization that is poorly done to the point of making the car unable to driven safely. Usually (and I am generalizing here) I see this on either donks or stanced cars. So, while a well-done donk or stanced car is fine, the ones I usually see on the road have blown shocks, piss poor brakes, horrible damping, and cheaply or poorly fabricated parts making it dangerous for them and everyone on the road around them.

#2. Again, you're right. I prefer manuals but don't have a problem with autos or DCTs. People should drive with whatever transmission they prefer, but, again, I don't like not being able to buy the car I want with a manual (especially when they're sold with a manual in other markets). So, I do get annoyed constantly being told to just get an auto instead.

I was going to recommend this, but then I got to the Hummer part. I like Hummers.

They are extremely uncommon around here, and I like them. They look huge compared to everything here.

Good job on describing the stance thing, I can't even post one stance-like thing before the Oppo anti-stance-party comes around..

I will post a link to this post on every stance post I make, so that people will calm down before commenting.

Haha, sorry, the Hummer part is just a joke. In the same sort of vein as this from Goldmember:

hmm.. You are making this difficult..

You redeem yourself by saying it was a joke, then you post a video about someone not liking my country's people?

Okay, you get your recommendation... for the great post!

Generally I don't fly into a rage-filled hate about anything related to car customizing, though I do strongly dislike those who make their sports cars into donks or they stance them. A sports car exists for the purpose of driving fast and handling well, and stancing/donking(?) them negates this purpose. I am fine with how people convert old sedans into donks, or how the Japanese VIP style uses stanced luxury cars, but using sports cars is just a no in my book.

it was funny. I looked though all the pictures and was thinking, nice, nice, nice, then the hummer and your whole argument died with a trombone noise. there is no defending that.
